Should You Include A Cover Letter?

Is A Cover Letter Worth Including?

30th November 2022

When it comes to applying for jobs, it’s a good idea to give yourself as much of an edge over the competition as possible. One way you can do this is by applying a covering letter to your application.

To help, we’ll take you through why a cover letter is a good idea, and how to write a cover letter.

Make sure that the reader is aware that you know what you’re talking about and have done your research.

Do I need a cover letter?

In short, yes, you do. A cover letter is a great way of introducing yourself to a potential employer on your terms. It gives you a sense of freedom to write and cultivate a message that isn’t determined by questions on a form, or within an interview. You’re in control, so a cover letter is a great way to get your personality, drive and passion for a role across to a potential employer.

How to write a cover letter

Writing a cover letter allows you to get your personality and desire across to your potential employer and a recruitment agency may have already advised that this is a good idea when applying. Writing it is a different matter, as you will need to make every word count – here are a few tips when it comes to how to write a cover letter.

Strong Opening

Start with a really powerful opening line or statement. This can make all the difference and just like a good blog, opening up with a sentence that leaves a mark encourages the reader to pay attention to the rest, and a cover letter is no different, e.g. ‘I was excited to see Company ABC are hiring for a Project Manager that matches my experience and qualifications and I believe I am a right fit for the company and this role.’

Show you’ve done your research

Make sure that the reader is aware that you know what you’re talking about and have done your research. Whether it is about the job you are applying for, the organisation or even in some instances, the person you’re writing to. Ensure you are correct, as mistakes this early in an application can be costly. For example reference something from their website that interested you or something from the job description.

Clear and concise

Throughout your cover letter, you must be clear and concise with what you’re writing. You’ll harm your application process if you are mumbling or writing far too much unnecessarily. Make sure your subject and what you want to get across, has clarity and leaves no doubt in what you’re saying.

Are there times when I shouldn’t use a cover letter?

There aren’t many, but there are a few times when a cover letter can’t be used.

If you are applying for an internal job then there’s no need to present a cover letter, the organisation should be aware of who you are and your history already, so there shouldn’t be a need to write a cover letter.

Add a cover letter to your job application

Now you know more about writing a cover letter it should only enhance your job application and hopefully, you can then start to look towards writing a resignation letter for your current employer.
